Beggar Mafia in India
Beggars in India
Beggars in India
Organized
begging is a form of human trafficking that is highly practiced in India.
Around 60,000 children go missing in India each year, however, there are
probably way more that are not accounted for. The children are forced to work
for beggar mafia's, which are organized criminal groups. The mafia usually only
takes children that are ten years of age or younger. It is recommended that
tourists, as well as natives, do not give the beggars any type of money. By giving
them money, the mafia keeps making more and more money, which means they will
be kidnapping more kids.
"Arms-for-Alms" Scandal
The CNN-IBN
news channel underwent an investigation and caught three doctors on video
agreeing to amputate limbs of child beggars for as low as $200 or 10,000
rupees. However, the price usually ranges between $200-$800 or 10,000 to 40,000
rupees. The doctors would typically sew the muscles shut which causes gangrene
then they would amputate the chosen limb two to three days later. The reason
they choose to amputate the children's legs is because disabled children
brought in more money since people felt bad for them.

How to Deal With Beggars
These
children could literally break somebody's heart just by the way they look,
however, it is important that you do not give them money. Instead, you could
offer them food or drink, even though they usually turn it down. How should I
deal with beggars in India? It may seem kind of cruel, however, the best thing
to do is ignore the beggars, even if they are children. If you feel like you
have to give them money, be sure to give them a very small amount (But I personally
feel that you should not give them money because it is the only way to
eradicate begging from our society). It is also important that you do not give
money to women beggars with newborn babies. These babies are rented and drugged
in order to make them drowsy. Please note that begging is not allowed in India;
begging is illegal (begging act 1959) by law in India. Begging is active in India
due to the religious nature of India and by foreigners or travelers who feel
bad for beggars (effect of Slumdog millionaire). Ignore the beggars as much as
possible, even though it is very difficult.
We have them here on the streets of Boston, too. It is very sad, but I never give them anything because so much help is available if they would just take it.
ReplyDeleteWow, this whole thing is just terrible, and sad. I wasn't even aware this was happening!
ReplyDeleteWow, the beggar mafia scandal is so sad. I can't believe they do that to those poor kids.
ReplyDeleteThis is so utterly sad and depressing. I agree with you better to feed them than give them money
ReplyDeleteWow there's no way I could NOT help a child beggar. I've never seen one, but believe me that would have me torn apart.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. My heart weeps at such atrocities. I cannot imagine that anyone could treat an innocent child this way. I pray for these kids that their voices will be heard and that they will be rescued from slavery
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad. I once saw a documentary and it broke my heart. The kids are so cute and innocent. Once they age out, they are literally left to die.
ReplyDeleteI just can't go there. Seeing those kids there would break my heart and want to take them all home. Amber N
ReplyDeleteI usually offer food to beggars. This way, I will be sure that they will not use the money I give them to buy drugs or alcohol.
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely heartbreaking. It would be very hard to ignore the beggars when they're children.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad! It's hard to say no to a child who is begging so I can only imagine how much they make. Something needs to be done and quickly to help these poor children.
ReplyDeleteSo sad that children are involved. I donated $50 to a person in Italy who had a small child on her lap under a blanket. Hubby told me it was a scam. Sure enough, right around the corner and for the rest of our trip we saw more of the same. :(
ReplyDeleteI always try to give a little something if i see someone struggling. If i don't want to give money i will go and buy a sandwich and a drink for them.
ReplyDeleteThis is just terribly sad. I had no idea something like this was going on and to exploit children too! I hope the situation improves for these kids.
ReplyDeleteThis is so horrible. I have heard such news from one of my friend who lives in India. But the statistics & the facts you have mentioned are really scary. When I see Children begging I always offer them food, though many a times I feel I need more power to do so much to them!
ReplyDeleteWriting here and expressing your sorrows for these kids who have been kidnapped, otherwise they belonged to some loving families who would have educated them and made them great human beings. What maximum we can do than to offer food to these kids. I suggest reverse kidnapping (kidnap the beggar kids and give them homage) if the government supports. But unfortunately the support of the government is unlikely because people sitting up there also get there share. I curse them all to go to hell for such a heinous crime.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad - I always try to offer something tangible like food or drink rather than cash.
ReplyDeleteThis is sad and disgusting that people exist that do such horrible things to children for money! I never was aware of this happening. Breaks my heart.
ReplyDeleteYikes, begging can be found all over the world-but I don't think that it is as bad here as you are describing it is in India. Once I saw a Mom and young child begging--I took them to a food place and bought that child food--and yes she was hungry!!
ReplyDeleteThis is very very sad. I see begging a lot and I always want to help.
ReplyDeleteThere is a certain area near downtown where the beggars hang out. I have not really seen any kids but I dont think I could not give anything to them.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible and so very sad. We have beggars here, but not children beggars. Although I've always been the person to offer food or drink but like you said most don't want that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a way to use children, so so sad. And In most western countries you find people who genuinely would receive help if they sought it then right way. In less developed countries it has become a way of earning a living..Why!
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad, I knew India had some tough things going on but this is horrible. My heart aches reading this. Thank you for sharing the human trafficking going on there.
ReplyDeleteThis made me blood boil! How can they do such a horrible thing to children? Amputate a limb to make them look desperate for alms? Unbelievable. I hope the government would do something to stop this and put the perpetrators of this crime behind bars for the rest of their lives.
ReplyDeleteIt is terrible that so many people abuse children for their own monetary gain. My friend just returned from India and she said it was a huge problem.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I could handle seeing a child beggar. I had no idea it was this bad in India with beggars.
ReplyDeleteyour post sheds light on human rights issues happening right now in the world. I lived in Burkina Faso and saw much of these same issues.
ReplyDeleteI'd give anyway. The thought of a child being beaten because he didn't meet his daily requirement makes me sick. Our world is full of evil people. I can't wait until Jesus Christ returns to save the innocent.
ReplyDeleteThis is heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteI think it is so sad that children are being exploited by these predators. I wish all of these children who are being victimized would be rescued.
ReplyDeleteThis totally broke my heart :-/ I have traveled the world and have heard this type of story many times & it just kills me.
ReplyDeleteThis breaks my heart seeing children being used for crime children are the most important asset a country has they are the future
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, this isn't just happening in India. Although there's no denying that it is definitely a huge issue, it's heartbreaking that these kids are being used for money and that they are not receiving proper care.
ReplyDeleteIt's literally the same in the Philippines and what I don't like is the fact that most of the givers' mindsets are based on fear of Karma rather than the thought of caring by itself. Nevertheless, this post is a good lesson for everyone.
ReplyDeleteHow sad that this thing is happening around the world. Poor children, they should be in school and not begging in the streets.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. It's heartbreaking to hear stuff like this. Whenever we see a homeless person in our area, it saddens me.
ReplyDeleteWe also have this in our country, hope that the government make a stand against it. Poor kids.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about the beggar mafia. It saddens me to hear that these children are helpless. In the area I live in, we don't see very many homeless people at all. I think I have seen one or two in the 10+ years I have lived here.
ReplyDeleteI hate it every time I hear news that they use the innocent children to extract money from people. This is so heartbreaking and so sad that this is also happening in my country.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard, but I can understand why ignoring them is the best option. Still, the whole thing is so sad.
ReplyDeleteEvery-time I see some child like this I help them by getting them something because they deserve to be happy too.
ReplyDeleteOh my, the statistics is so scary & I cant even imagine that doctors who need to save another life gets in to such dirty way of earning & become a part of such a horrible story. And yes, I would say better ignore the beggars though it could be heart breaking for the moment.
ReplyDeleteomg, I have given children beggars money before. It's hard not to do so. I'm glad you're passing the information along!!I wish something could be done to make this better!!
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible! It's beyond horrible. How people could be so cruel to children is beyond me. The worse conditions in the world are usually driven by the pursuit of money. So sad.
ReplyDeleteWhy are you writing ignore them as much as possible? It isn't solution neither giving them food is solution. You don't have to ignore them , you can talk to them and ask if they are working for some mafia they won't tell you easily but you can convince them and if they are trapped by mafia please contact your local police or atlest some NGO
ReplyDeleteDeep, it is not easy to convince them. They fear a lot!! They already lost their hands and other body parts and they will never take risks of their lives. I completely understand what you are trying to say but things are not much easy; there are more than 60k beggars in Delhi alone. Police is now fingerprinting as well as photographing these beggars to confirm their identity and to save kids from mafia. I hope Delhi police will crack down beggar mafia soon.
DeleteIt doesn't just happen in India, nor just with children.
